My first six months at Zone — Srikanth Dorairaj

Senior front-end developer Srikanth Dorairaj shares his experience of starting at Zone just as lockdown began…

I’m originally from India and moved to UK to pursue my master’s degree. Before joining Zone, I was living and working in Glasgow for a year, but wanted to move south for family reasons and came across Zone.

I chose Zone as the company culture really attracted me. I was excited to work alongside passionate, positive and smart people. The hiring process was straightforward and I was informed at every stage of the process. The interview process was engaging and conversation flowed, as opposed to the interrogation style I have experienced before. Fortunately, I interviewed in person at the Zone London office in January before starting in mid-March when the effects of Covid began to come into focus.

Starting during tricky times…

Unlike most remote joiners, my first day was actually in the Zone office (since then I have been working from home). I was lucky enough to experience one full day of normality, meet some of my team members and get a feel of the office on a working day. The London office is in the heart of the city and is open plan which is great for collaboration between employees and has a generally relaxed working atmosphere.

After that, the country went into lockdown and the rest of my onboarding experience was remote. This was a new experience for me, so naturally, there were a few challenges to overcome. Firstly, getting to know my team and project. Each member of my team scheduled a WebEx call to introduce themselves and the project to me. I was aided at every single stage of on boarding with the front-end guys being so approachable and quick to respond.

Secondly, the nature/format of the project. It was a client project which followed Agile methodology, so there were daily stand-ups and retros every month. Outside the client project, Zone hosted weekly all-agency Q&As where there was an open dialogue and we could voice any queries.

My tips…

Being a new starter six months ago, it was important for me to bring myself up to speed with others. So from the start, I wasn’t afraid to ask questions. For me, this was the most efficient way to learn and start contributing from the get-go.

Having a spare room in my two-bed flat has been a tremendous help, allowing for a home office with the right desk and chair. Having a nice Spotify playlist helps me to concentrate on work and going out for a jog at the end of the day ensures that I feel refreshed.

My usual day as a senior front-end developer…

My day usually starts with a stand-up. After a status update with my teams will pick up a ticket and start working on it. After lunch, I test my code by writing unit tests and deploy stuffs to the testable work environment. In-between, I may have a couple of meetings.

What I love about Zone…

Flexibility has been something I have really appreciated over the last six months, especially given the circumstances. Zone have shipped out all the necessary equipment I could possibly need to ensure I am comfortable working from home. Zone also sends out an Officevibe survey every three weeks to understand our employee needs.

We write about customer experience, employee experience, design, content & technology to share our knowledge with the wider community.
