1. Rubik’s cubes is just the start for robots

Advancements in robotic technologies have seen a robo-hand solve a Rubik’s cubein minutes. To learn how to solve the cube, OpenAI used a computer simulation to teach the robot routines that would have taken a single human around 10,000 years to complete.

Back in March 2018 MIT engineers built a machine that could solve a cube in just 0.38 seconds, so what’s the big deal? Well, this is the first time a robot that wasn’t specifically designed for the task has triumphed. Engineers also found that upping the difficulty through obstructions didn’t necessarily prevent completion — something that robots must learn to overcome if we ever want them peeling and cutting our veg!

2. Virgin Galactic launches astronaut range

When Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon, I’m pretty sure his outfit was the least of his worries. But today not even intergalactic apparel can escape thedesigner treatment. Under Armour has designed the spacesuits for upcoming Virgin Galactic flights, basing them on sporty active wear rather than traditional astronaut gear. At least the lucky few rocketing into space will be doing it in style and comfort.

But the new look offers substance as well as style, in that the clothing has been designed to stimulate blood flow and proper temperature management while providing comfort and flexibility. There are even plans to bring the range to the high street for those seeking a look that is out of this world.

3. A Beacon of light for internet privacy?

A new platform is being launched that could radically change how consumers consent to their data being collected online. Beacon, a wonderful acronym for the Better Ethics and Consumer Outcomes Network, is a US start-up that has developed a system that automatically updates, and more importantly, explains in plain English how and why companies collect data.

Former Google experience design consultant Joe Toscano (pictured) is at the helm, with a firm belief that his product will give consumers more control and redefine how they experience end-user legal agreements, including those dreaded privacy policies and terms of service.

4. Unbox a side order of phone with your pizza

My usual side with a Domino’s pizza is hot wings. But 50 lucky social media influencers are getting a new smartphone with their American Hot. Google has teamed up with Domino’s to promote its new Pixel 4, surfing the “unboxing” trend that has become a firm favourite on YouTube.

Naturally, the influencers are playing ball by uploading their unboxing videos to the web. Where’s the link between phones and pizza? Well, not only can you order from your phone, but you can also use the Pixel 4’s hands-free functions so you don’t even have to stop scoffing greasy pizza to use your device. Now that’s progress.

5. Fur-friendly Ubers set to have tails wagging

Getting a cab with a pet isn’t easy. Whether it’s because of cleanliness or allergies, a lot of taxi drivers just aren’t that keen on having Fido or Mog travel with you. Well, in a few US cities Uber are currently trialling a feature called Uber Pet that lets you hail a pet-friendly driver for a few extra dollars.

At the moment, you need to call in advance to ask if you can bring a pet along for a ride, which can take time and prove disastrous if you’re in a veterinary emergency. So having a pre-agreed list of fur-friendly drivers — especially in cities where many people don’t have cars — will be a welcome relief for many pet owners.
